FAQ

Straight answers about going solar.

These are the questions homeowners ask us most. If yours is not here, an advisor will be glad to answer it.

Do you serve my part of Downey?

Yes. Kinetik Energy works with homeowners throughout Downey, CA, including ZIP codes 90240, 90241, and 90242. Your consultation can be in person in Downey or by video, in English or Spanish.

Will I still get a bill from Southern California Edison?

Yes. Most solar homes still receive a monthly utility bill. It shows the energy you used and the energy your system produced, plus a monthly connection charge that applies to every customer. Credits for extra power you send to the grid can lower what you owe. Your advisor will walk you through what your bill could look like before you decide.

Will my home lose power during a blackout?

Solar panels on their own shut off during a grid outage for safety. To keep your power on, you need a battery set up for backup. Depending on the system, backup can cover your essential circuits or your whole home. Your advisor will help you choose the setup that fits your needs.

Who provides electricity in Downey, and how does solar billing work?

Southern California Edison (SCE) provides electricity to homes in Downey. New SCE solar customers are on SCE's Solar Billing Plan, also called the Net Billing Tariff or NEM 3.0. Credits for the extra solar power you send to the grid change by the hour, and your home uses a time-of-use rate. A battery can help you use more of your own solar power in the evening, when rates are usually highest. Your advisor will show how the plan affects your home, with and without a battery.

Do I need a permit to install solar in Downey?

Yes. Solar and battery systems in Downey need a building permit and inspection from the City of Downey Building & Safety Division. Your licensed installation partner pulls the permit and schedules the inspection, and we keep track of it for you. After the city signs off, SCE approves the system before it can be turned on.

Will solar put a lien on my home?

Going solar does not put a mortgage on your home. Some loan, lease, and PPA providers file a notice tied to the equipment (called a UCC fixture filing), which can come up when you sell or refinance. Your advisor will show you exactly what your program includes before you sign anything.

Will my property taxes go up?

In California, qualifying solar energy systems are currently excluded from property tax reassessment. Ask your advisor, or your county assessor, how this applies to your home.

What about my roof?

Every installation is completed by a licensed installation partner and includes a 10-year roof penetration warranty, so you are covered where the system attaches to your roof. Your advisor will show you the warranty in writing before you sign.

Who owns the system?

It depends on the option you choose. With cash or a loan, you own the system. With a lease or a power purchase agreement (PPA), the provider owns and maintains it. We explain the trade-offs so you can choose what is best for you.

What happens if I sell my home?

Systems you own usually transfer with the home. Leases and PPAs can generally be transferred to the buyer, who applies with the provider. We explain the transfer process up front so there are no surprises.

What warranties are included?

Warranties come from the equipment manufacturer, the installer, and the finance provider, and some last up to 25 years. Equipment carries manufacturer warranties of at least 10 years. PPA programs include 25-year coverage on parts and equipment, including panels, inverters, and batteries, plus a production guarantee that your system will perform as designed. Exact coverage depends on your equipment and program, and your advisor will review every warranty with you.

Do I need perfect credit?

No. We work with several financing partners that offer options for a range of credit profiles. Approval is determined by the lender. $0-down options are available for qualified homeowners.

Is Kinetik Energy the installer?

No. Kinetik Energy is an independent solar brokerage. Our registered advisors help you compare options and match you with a licensed, bonded, and insured installation partner. Then we manage the project from start to finish.
